Nasarawa Govt. partners USAID to distribute over 1m insecticidal nets

Nasarawa State Government has inaugurated a committee for effective distribution of over one million long lasting insecticidal nets provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Inaugurating the Committee on Friday in Lafia, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Iya, said that the distribution of the nets was part of government’s efforts to curb the scourge of malaria in the state.

He enumerated the terms of reference of the committee to include, addressing all bottlenecks at the highest level and undertaking advocacy at the state and local government areas to promote engagement.

The committee headed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr Jibrin Giza, was also saddled with the responsibility of mobilizing resources, tracking progress toward implementation, monitoring and addressing security issues.

Iya advised the team to partner traditional institution to ensure that people in rural areas across the 13 Local Governments of the state were properly enlightened to achieve the objective of the exercise.

He said members of the committee were drawn from the ministries of Health, Information Culture and Tourism, Environment, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Security Agencies, Faith Based Organisations and the media.

In a remark, Mr Godwin Adenagbon, Senior Adviser, Malaria Logistic of USAID, explained that the project was under the Global Health Supply Chain of the agency.

The committee was expected to begin campaign immediately, while the distribution of the net would commence later in July.
