CHAIRMAN, Ikole Local
Government Area of Ekiti, Mr
Adeyeye Adeyanju, says the
council has cultivated one acre
for yam tubers in line with the
Federal Government’s vision of
food for all in the country.
Adeyanju, stated this yesterday
in Ikole-Ekiti that the step was to
ensure that the council feeds the
state and Nigeria in general with
tubers of yam.
“The council decided to embark
on massive production of yam
tubers because it wanted to align
with the Federal Government’s
vision of providing food for all by
the year 2018.
“Also, we want to provide
surplus yam tubers for our people
in particular and Nigerians in
general.
“Our administration is ready
to boost the economic base of the
council, due to the dwindling
Federal allocation being
experienced in the nation recently.
“The agricultural sector has been
contributing immensely to the
development of the country over
the years; hence, the need to boost
the sector in order to provide food
for the citizenry.’’
He said that Ikole Local
Government Area also embarked
on the cultivation of other
agricultural ventures such as
piggery to make food readily
available to the people.
“ This local government is
regarded as the largest producer
of yams in Ekiti; so, we are leading
by example in order to encourage
farmers in other council areas to
follow suit.
“We believe as government
that there is no way we can
impact positively on the people
we govern if there is so much
hunger in the land.
“We must not also forget
that our governor, Mr Ayo
Fayose, introduced what he
called `Stomach Infrastructure’
as part of the agenda of his
administration.
“Indeed, several state
governments are now embracing.
“All our programmes are being
geared toward the economic base
of the people,” Adeyanju said.
He said, “My administration
is committed to providing foods
and making all the communities
across the council economically
independent.”
The council boss appealed to
the traditional rulers and other
stakeholders in the council area
to cooperate with the council so
that it could boost its Internally
Generated Revenue IGR,base.
He said that would improve the
financial base of the council in
addition to the monthly federal
allocation. Also, our people
would enjoy more dividends of
democracy, he said. NAN
